Kamala Harris wins the California Attorney General race and makes history
Just received this mass email from the grassroots Color of Change organization. After weeks of recounts and deliberation..history has been made!! Congrats to Kamala, we wish you the best during your term!
Dear Dele,
Kamala Harris just declared victory in the race to become California’s Attorney General, after winning by a razor-thin margin — only about 50,000 votes out of more than 7 million cast.1 It was so close that election workers had to count votes for weeks before they could determine the result. It’s a huge victory, and it wouldn’t have happened without a groundswell of support from everyday people including the thousands of ColorOfChange.org members who voted for Harris, helped get the word out, and volunteered for her campaign.
Harris will become the first Black person, the first woman, and the first Asian-American to serve as Attorney General in California, and she’ll bring a new approach to our broken criminal justice and prison system. Harris was up against millions of dollars attack ads funded by wealthy corporate interests and Republicans from outside the state,2 and it looked like it might be too much for her campaign to overcome. But in the end, ordinary people organizing for change beat this corporate attack on Harris.
This is a great moment for California and for all who care about shifting the criminal justice system to be more fair and just. And it’s a reminder that when a community acts together, we can achieve huge things.
